Benefits of Disability Compensation

The Disability Compensation is an additional benefit from the Department of Veterans Affairs for eligible veterans who suffered injuries and deadly diseases at the time of service. This is a tax-free monthly payment to cover the veteran’s medical and caregiver expenses.

Eligibility for VA Disability Compensation

Here is the compensation eligibility guide – 
  • A federal veteran needs to be ill or injured under specific terms and conditions.

  • The veteran has served active training and duty

Additional criteria for compensation eligibility include (Any One) –

  • The federal employee got sick or injured during federal services

  • The veteran had been ill or injured before they joined the armed forces and services deteriorated their conditions

  • A disability that surfaced at the end of the service term or right after discharge from the armed forces without any dishonorable charges (also known as post-service disability)

Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) Program

Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) is a life insurance program that allows veterans to convert their Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage to renewable term life insurance after they leave the military. This program is managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and offers continued life insurance protection for eligible veterans.

Key Features of VGLI

  1. Eligibility:  Veterans with SGLI coverage while in service can convert to VGLI. The application must be made within one year and 120 days of separation from service. If you apply within the first 240 days after separation, you can get coverage without providing evidence of good health.
  1. Coverage Amount:  Veterans can choose coverage in increments of $10,000, up to the maximum coverage they had under SGLI, which can be as high as $500,000. Additionally, veterans can increase their coverage by $25,000 every five years until they reach age 60, up to the maximum coverage limit.
  1. Renewable Term Insurance:  VGLI is renewable every five years regardless of age, health, or occupation, meaning the policyholder can continue their coverage for as long as they wish, provided they pay the premiums.
  1. Premiums:  VGLI premiums are based on the veteran’s age at the time of coverage renewal and can increase as the veteran ages. Unlike SGLI, VGLI premiums are not deducted from military pay and must be paid directly by the veteran.
  1. Conversion to Permanent Insurance:  VGLI policyholders have the option to convert their VGLI term coverage into an individual permanent life insurance policy with any participating commercial insurance company at any time, without having to prove their insurability (i.e., without a medical exam).
  1. Beneficiary Designation:  As with SGLI, VGLI policyholders can designate one or more beneficiaries to receive the insurance proceeds in the event of their death.

VGLI provides an essential service by allowing veterans to maintain life insurance coverage after their military service ends, offering financial security and peace of mind as they transition to civilian life.

  • VA Healthcare – Coverage for regular appointments and checkups with specialists, mental health service providers, and access to home healthcare. 
  • Disability Compensation – A monthly compensation for Veterans who are ill or injured for service-related reasons such as a brain disease or a bullet injury. 
  • Pension – This is a pension plan for wartime Veteran survivors. Additionally, this pension is also available to the spouses and children of deceased wartime veterans. 
  • Life Insurance – A financial security for Veterans and their family members. It allows Veterans to get an appropriate life insurance plan. 
  • Service Members Benefits – Uniformed service members in the USA who served in active military, navy, air force, or the Marines are eligible to get benefits during or after service years.

NOTE: All veterans are uniformed service members but all service members are not veterans. 

  • VA Family Members Benefits – Spouses and dependent children of retired veterans or qualified service members get healthcare, life insurance, and educational compensation.

The Special Monthly Compensation is a tax-free payment. This benefit is commonly known as aid and attendance for spouses. The payment is based on the situation of aid and attendance.
